Why You Need to (Re)Start Therapy Before Coronavirus #stayathome Ends

Wow, we’ve been home 5, 6, 7 or even more weeks now. Covid-19 has us sheltering in place, social distancing, getting on zoom, wearing comfy pants, playing games, working in the yard, you know the drill. Life may have become easier while you’re at home. You may have adjusted to helping kids with their work, working from home, cooking more, etc. If you’re more of an extrovert, you’ve probably found ways to keep busy, try new things, and stay connected with people. If you’re more of an introvert, you might enjoy having to be isolated for a bit.

Are you finding that your anxiety is down overall?

Sure, it might be up when we think or read about the state of things due to the pandemic, but if you’ve been removed from the people or situations that typically raise your anxiety, being home may have given you a bit of a reprieve. Or maybe the anxiety you typically feel about your health, your family or work is lower, because you’ve been distracted from it. Great!

But that’s not a sustainable solution.

While some people believe they don’t need a therapist right now, can’t find the space or time to have a session in their house, or say they don’t have anything to talk about, these are often excuses. Therapy can be a space to vent, a space to talk about your day to day interactions and your reactions to them, but it is so much more than that. It’s about finding sustainable ways to heal from the challenges and wounds of your life so you can move forward differently. The same issues that plagued you before Covid-19, are still going to be there when we get back to living our lives. When our cities, towns, and workplaces begin to open up, there will be a number of transitions. The pace of our lives will pick up, the responsibilities will change, and our interactions with others will increase and our ability to deal with everything will be challenged. We’ll also have all of our grief and sadness layered on top about everything we’ve missed and everything our kids have missed. Then there’s the worry about what’s to come. The sense of uncertainty we feel now, will only grow.

What if you could come out of this stronger and more resilient?

What if you could finally let go of some of your past sh*t and develop new insight? What if you could learn new ways to cope with whatever life throws at you? That can all happen if you use this time to work on yourself.

Having a therapist, a guide, an expert, can make this process so much easier.

Think you can do it all yourself? Sure, it’s possible. But how likely is it. You’ve been trying for years and haven’t seen much change. How long are you going to put off feeling better? This time we’ve been given to slow down is a gift. Use it to tackle the personal stuff you’ve been putting off.

Make a decision to stop saying, maybe later.

If you’re ready to talk about the hard stuff, stop playing the hand you were dealt, and create a new game plan, I’d love to chat. I offer free 15 min consultations.
